UC San Diego

Serving institutions of higher education summer sessions since 1917.

About AUSS

Since its founding in 1917, the Association of University Summer Sessions has served as a forum for discussing the theoretical and practical issues of summer session.

The by-invitation institutional membership of 50 universities balances regional representation; private and public; and large and small institutions. Unifying the member institutions is a centralized summer session administration and a research focus.

Mission

The basic purposes and overall mission of the summer sessions offered by the members of the Association of University Summer Sessions are:

  • To provide courses and programs for undergraduate, graduate and professional degree-seeking students who are also enrolled during the fall and spring terms, thus enabling them to complete their degree programs in a timely fashion;
  • To provide formats and opportunities for teaching and learning partnerships that are more difficult to offer and enroll in during other terms, e.g. intensive foreign language courses, limited term academic institutes, field courses, internships, and field research;
  • To provide courses and programs serving special groups of clientele, e.g. teachers, concurrently registered high school students, guests, and students from other colleges and universities;
  • To provide a setting for curricular experimentation, innovation and change;
  • To provide pre-college programs which may serve to recruit students, serve as bridge programs for minority/disadvantaged youth, and/or continuing intellectual development;
  • To encourage and support a variety of cultural and intellectual events on campus for students and staff as well as for the surrounding community.
